Istanbul is split three ways: the historic peninsula with the mosques and the bazaars, modern Beyoğlu across the Golden Horn, and the Asian side across the Bosphorus. Most visitors stay in Sultanahmet and never leave it, which means they see the monuments and none of the city. The commuter ferry to Kadıköy takes twenty minutes, costs almost nothing, and drops you in a district of markets and meyhanes where you'll be the only tourist. Do it in the evening with the light on the water.

April to May and September to October are the best — warm, clear and comfortable for walking.
Summer is hot and humid, into the mid-thirties, which is hard work in a city this hilly. Winter is cold and often wet, with occasional snow on the domes, which is beautiful and very cheap. Ramadan shifts the rhythm of the city each year — daytime eating is more restricted and evenings become festive; we'll flag it against your dates.
4 hours to Istanbul Airport (IST) or Sabiha Gökçen (SAW) on the Asian side, which is further out.
The M11 metro from IST reaches the centre in about 40 minutes. Airport taxis take an hour or more in traffic.
