South Beach gets the attention. Little Havana, Wynwood and Coconut Grove are where the city actually lives.
Ocean Drive's art deco strip is worth a morning — the architecture genuinely is remarkable and it's best seen early, before the pavement restaurants start hustling. But three miles across the causeway is Little Havana, with Cuban coffee windows and domino players, and Wynwood, an old warehouse district covered in murals. Miami is a Latin American city that happens to be in the United States, and staying only on the sand means missing that entirely.

Eight hundred art deco buildings, the largest concentration anywhere. Walk it in the morning for the architecture, not at night for the restaurants.
Calle Ocho. Cuban coffee at a walk-up window, cigars rolled by hand, and dominoes in Máximo Gómez Park.
An hour west. Alligators, sawgrass and a very loud boat. Go with a smaller operator inside the national park.
A warehouse district turned open-air street-art gallery. Free to walk the streets around it, and the best food in the city nearby.
An Italianate villa and gardens on Biscayne Bay, built in 1916. Cool, shaded and a complete contrast to the beach.
A causeway island with quieter beaches and a lighthouse. Where locals go when South Beach is full.
The beach island or the mainland. They're twenty minutes and two different cities apart.

North of South Beach. Quieter sand, family hotels, and a short drive to everything.
Skyscrapers, restaurants and the metro. No beach, better value, and closer to the airport.
Mainland neighbourhoods with banyan trees and good food. Where Miamians actually live.
November to April is dry and comfortable. Summer is hot, humid and stormy.
Winter sits at 24–26°C with low humidity and is peak season, filling with American visitors escaping the cold. March brings spring break. Summer reaches 33°C with high humidity and daily storms, inside hurricane season. April and November are the value windows with good weather.

A car is useful for the mainland. South Beach is walkable, and parking there is expensive and scarce.
