Every island here has an Atlantic side and a Caribbean side, and they are not the same holiday.
The east faces open ocean — dramatic, windy, often unswimmable. The west and south are sheltered, flat, and where virtually every resort sits. It's obvious once you know it and completely invisible in a brochure photograph, which is why a deal can look unusually cheap. If you take one thing from this page, take that: ask which coast before you ask anything else.
