Buda, on the west bank, is the hilly, older, quieter half — the castle, the fishermen's bastion, the views back across the river. Pest, on the flat east bank, is where the city actually lives: the parliament, the grand boulevards, the ruin bars, the market hall, and almost every restaurant worth booking. Stay in Pest and cross to Buda for a day. Do it the other way round and you'll spend your evenings on the wrong side of the river.
Two things here are genuinely unlike anywhere else in Europe: the baths and the ruin bars.

Stay in Pest. Districts V, VI and VII put you within walking distance of nearly everything.
Parliament, the Danube promenade and the smartest hotels. Quiet at night, walkable to everything.
The old Jewish quarter, and the centre of the city's nightlife and restaurant scene. Lively, and loud at weekends.
Around Andrássy út. Elegant, central, and slightly calmer than VII.
Pretty and peaceful, with the best views. You'll cross the river most evenings.
Spring and early autumn are the best months. Summer is hot and busy; winter is cold, cheap and the baths are at their best.
April to June and September to October give you warm days and manageable crowds. July and August can hit 35°C, which is unpleasant in a city with little shade. Winter drops below freezing but that's exactly when an outdoor thermal bath makes sense, and hotel rates are at their lowest. The Christmas markets run from mid-November to 1 January.

The 100E direct bus to Deák Ferenc tér takes about 40 minutes and costs a few pounds.
Hungarian forint, not euro. Cards are accepted almost everywhere; carry cash for markets and baths.
Walk in Pest. Trams 2 and 4/6 are cheap, frequent and cover the rest — tram 2 along the river is a sightseeing trip in itself.
