Long-haul holidays

Anything over about nine hours is worth breaking. On most Gulf and Asian routings the stopover version costs less than flying straight through — which is the single most useful thing we can tell you.

Match the trip length to the flight length

A rough rule that saves a lot of disappointment: one night on the ground for every hour in the air, minimum.

Ten hours to the Maldives justifies ten nights. Thirteen to Japan justifies at least twelve. Twenty-two to Australia needs three weeks — two means four days in transit and one city, which is why we'd honestly suggest going to Asia instead if that's all the time you have. The other half of the rule is the stopover: you're changing planes anyway, so getting off for three nights turns dead time into a destination, and the fare difference is often nil or negative.

Long-haul that earns the flight

With honest flight times and the minimum stay we'd recommend.

Questions people ask

What's the minimum trip length for long-haul?

Roughly one night per hour of flying. Ten hours, ten nights. Less than that and you spend a large share of the holiday adjusting.

Does the stopover really cost less?

Often, yes — and we price both so you can see it rather than take our word for it. It's the clearest argument there is for using an agent.

Which is the easiest long-haul destination?

The Caribbean or South Africa. Both are direct, English-speaking, drive on the left, and have little or no time difference.

Can you book premium cabins?

Yes, and we'll tell you honestly where the upgrade is worth it and where the money is better spent on the hotel.

Long-haul, and whether the flight earns itself

Anything over nine hours needs ten nights or a stopover to be worth it.
