The west and south are sheltered Caribbean water. The east faces the open Atlantic.
The Platinum Coast on the west is flat, calm and where the smart hotels are, with the highest prices on the island. The south coast around St Lawrence Gap is livelier, cheaper and still swimmable. The east — Bathsheba and the Atlantic parishes — is spectacular, windy and mostly unsafe to swim, which is why it's almost undeveloped. A cheap Barbados deal is usually east-facing, and that's the thing to check before anything else.
Food, rum and turtles. Barbados does eating better than any island in the region.

Resident hawksbills and greens off the west coast. Take a small catamaran, not the party boat.
Distilling since 1703 — the oldest rum in the world. Tours most weekdays and worth booking.
The Atlantic coast. Boulders the size of houses, surf, and the Soup Bowl. Look, don't swim.
A tram through a limestone cave system with underground streams. Good for a rainy afternoon.
UNESCO-listed colonial architecture, and a horse-racing track in the middle of it. Saturday races are a local institution.
Pick the coast first, then the resort. It matters more here than the hotel.
Holetown and Paynes Bay. Calm water, best hotels, highest prices. Where most first-timers go.
Restaurants, bars and a walkable strip. Better value and still sheltered.
Pink sand and cliffs. Beautiful, and check swimming conditions before booking.
Atlantic surf and boulders. Extraordinary scenery, and not a place to base a beach holiday.
December to April is the dry season and the reliable window. Late April to early June is the value sweet spot.
January to March is peak — the most reliable weather and the highest rates, with Christmas and New Year higher still. Late April, May and early June give dry-season conditions at well below peak pricing and before the hurricane risk builds. June to November is hurricane season: prices drop sharply, most trips are unaffected, and the insurance needs to cover disruption properly.
