Antalya is the whole Turkish Mediterranean, not one town. The city itself has an old harbour and a proper restaurant scene. Then the resorts run east and west of it — Side and Alanya one way, Kemer and Ölüdeniz the other — each with a different character and a different price.

Ottoman houses, a Roman gate and a horseshoe harbour cut into the cliff. Most package holidays never bring you here, which is exactly why we build in a night or two. Stay inside the old walls rather than out in Lara if you want the version worth photographing.

Side, where the ruins are the town
A 15,000-seat Roman theatre sits in the middle of the high street, and the temple of Apollo is on the beach. Good for families who want something to do between pool sessions. Go early — by eleven the coach parties arrive and the light is gone.
Pick your stretch of coast
Four resorts, four different holidays
Cheapest of the four, liveliest at night, and the castle headland is genuinely worth the climb. Best value all-inclusive on this coast.
Pine forest running down to pebble coves, mountains behind. Clearer water than the sandy resorts and noticeably quieter.
Family territory. Big all-inclusive resorts, the waterfall and the ruins nearby, and a river boat trip that keeps children occupied for a day.
The postcard lagoon, and the paragliding launch off Babadağ. Further from Antalya airport — around three hours — so worth checking transfer times before you book.
When to go
July and August are hot enough to spoil it
Peak summer runs 35–40°C inland and the resorts are full. May, June, September and early October give you high-twenties, warm sea and noticeably lower prices. September is the one we book ourselves.
Average daytime highs. Navy marks peak season and peak pricing; pale blue marks the shoulder months we'd steer you towards.
