Skiathos

Twelve kilometres long, covered in pine, and ringed by more beaches than seems reasonable for its size. Also the island with the famously alarming airport approach.

The beaches are all on the south coast, and that's convenient

One road runs along it, with buses every fifteen minutes.

Skiathos is small and almost all its sand faces south, sheltered from the meltemi. A single bus route runs from the town to Koukounaries at the far end, stopping at every beach along the way, and it costs a couple of euros. That means you can stay anywhere on the strip and reach a different beach each day without a car — unusual, and the main practical argument for the island. The north coast is wilder and needs a boat or a rough track.

What to do

Beaches, boats, and a town that's better than it needs to be.

A pine-backed bay

Koukounaries

Pine forest running to fine pale sand, with a lagoon behind it. Consistently rated among Greece's best beaches. Bus stop 26.

A turquoise bay

Lalaria

White pebbles and a natural rock arch on the north coast, reachable only by boat. Half-day trips from the harbour.

A green coastline

Kastro

The abandoned medieval town on a headland, where islanders hid from pirates. A walk or a boat, and almost nobody goes.

Calm sea and coast

Skiathos Town

A harbour of tiled roofs, tavernas and small shops. Better than a resort town this size ought to be, and lovely in the evening.

A rocky headland

Skopelos day trip

Forty-five minutes by ferry. Where Mamma Mia was filmed, greener still, and quieter than Skiathos.

A hillside village

The airport approach

Aircraft come in low over the road at the harbour end. People stand and watch it. Whether that's a draw or a worry is up to you.

Where to stay

Town, or somewhere along the south coast bus route.

Skiathos Town

Central & lively

The harbour, restaurants and nightlife. Walk to the bus and two town beaches.

Megali Ammos & Achladies

Close & family

First stops out of town. Sandy, shallow, and a short bus or walk back in.

Vromolimnos & Platanias

Mid-island

Halfway along, quieter, with good beaches and a few tavernas.

Koukounaries

Far end & best beach

The pine forest and the lagoon. Quiet, and 20 minutes by bus from town.

Five things worth knowing

When to go

May to September, and it's a short season.

July and August are busy and hot at 30°C, with Greek and British visitors overlapping. June and September are ideal — warm sea, quieter beaches and lower prices. The island largely closes from mid-October to April, with charter flights ending and most tavernas shut.

Questions people ask

Do we need a car?

No — the south coast bus reaches every beach for a couple of euros. One of the few Greek islands where that's true.

Is a week enough?

Yes, and about right. It's twelve kilometres long. Add Skopelos or Alonissos if you want longer.

Which beach is the best?

Koukounaries for the pine forest and sand, Lalaria for drama if you'll take a boat, Vromolimnos for a good middle option.

Is the airport landing really that dramatic?

The approach is low over the coast road and people gather to watch. It's routine for the pilots and startling from the ground.
