In July and August the site regularly shuts at midday when temperatures pass 40°C — that's a public safety measure, not an inconvenience. Even outside those months, eight o'clock opening is the difference between the Parthenon in low light with a hundred people and midday with several thousand. The rest of Athens is best in the evening: the Plaka, the rooftop bars looking up at the lit citadel, and the food, which is far better than its reputation.

Glass floors over the excavated city, and the Parthenon frieze laid out as it stood. Air-conditioned, and better after the site than before.
The old quarter under the rock, and a cluster of Cycladic white houses built by island masons. Best in the early evening.
A temple to Poseidon on a headland, ninety minutes down the coast. Sunset there is the best half-day out of Athens.
The highest point in the city, by funicular or a steep walk. The Acropolis lit up below, and far fewer people than the rock itself.
Varvakios market in the morning, then the tavernas of Psyrri at night. The best eating in the city and almost no tourists.
Small centre. Stay within walking distance of the rock.
Under the Acropolis, walkable to everything. Touristy and unbeatable for a short stay.
South of the museum. Residential, good restaurants, and a ten-minute walk to the site.
Parliament, embassies and the metro hub. Best hotels and easy airport transfer.
The port, forty minutes out. Only worth it if you have a very early boat.
April to May and September to October. Summer is hot enough to change what you can do.
Spring and autumn give 22–27°C and comfortable walking. July and August pass 35°C routinely and reach 40°C, with the Acropolis closing during the hottest hours. Winter is mild at 13–15°C, cheap, and the sites are empty — a genuinely good time for a city break if you don't need the beach afterwards.

Metro line 3 to Syntagma in about 40 minutes, or the X95 bus. Both cheap and simple.
Euro. Cards widely accepted; tavernas and markets prefer cash.
Piraeus for the Cyclades and Crete, Rafina for Mykonos and Andros. Check which port your boat uses.
