The short version

West for scenery, east for sand, centre for everything else

The Algarve is not one coast but three. West of Lagos it's dramatic — ochre cliffs, stacks, coves reached by wooden staircases, and an Atlantic that's genuinely bracing. The central strip from Albufeira to Vilamoura has the big resorts, the golf and the nightlife. East of Faro towards Tavira it flattens into sandbar islands, lagoons and warm shallow water. Book the wrong one and you'll get a perfectly nice holiday that isn't the one you pictured.

The west

Lagos, and the cliffs everyone photographs

Ponta da Piedade, Praia da Marinha, Camilo — this is the postcard Algarve, and it's a genuinely spectacular stretch of coast. The catch is access: many of the best beaches involve a long wooden staircase down a cliff, which rules them out with a pushchair or bad knees. Lagos itself is a walled town with a real life beyond tourism, and the best base if scenery matters more than convenience.

The east

Tavira and the warm shallow lagoons

Past Faro the cliffs stop and the Ria Formosa begins — a lagoon system behind barrier islands, with beaches you reach by a five-minute ferry. The water is warmer and calmer than anywhere west, the sand is endless, and almost no British package traffic comes here. If you have small children or you've done Albufeira twice, this is where we'd send you.

Everything flies into Faro, which sits in the middle. Transfers run from twenty minutes to about an hour and a quarter — worth checking on any quote.

Lagos & Sagres · 1h from FAO

The west coast

The dramatic end. Cliffs, coves and the wildest beaches, plus the surf coast around Sagres where the Algarve turns the corner into the Atlantic proper.

Lagos: A walled old town, a marina and the cliff beaches within walking distance. The best all-round base in the west.
Praia da Luz: Small, quiet, low-rise and long-established with British visitors. Gentle.
Carvoeiro: A cove village that grew into a resort. Steep, pretty, and short on flat ground.
Sagres: The far south-west corner. Surf, cliffs and wind — a different holiday altogether.

Albufeira & Vilamoura · 30–45 min

The central strip

Where most of the package holidays are. The widest choice of hotels, the golf, the waterparks and the nightlife — and the shortest transfers.

Albufeira: Two halves: an old town around a fishing beach, and the Strip up the hill. Know which end you're booking.
Vilamoura: Purpose-built around a marina, with five golf courses. Smart, calm, and expensive.
Praia da Rocha: A long town beach below a cliff at Portimão. Big hotels, good value, lively.
Armação de Pêra: Long flat sandy beach and a quieter feel. Good with young children.

Tavira & Faro · 30–50 min

The east

Lagoons, sandbar islands and warm shallow water. Barely any British package presence, which is exactly the appeal.

Tavira: A river town of churches and a Roman bridge, with an island beach a ferry ride away.
Cabanas: A boardwalk village on the lagoon. Tiny, calm and very Portuguese.
Monte Gordo: Long sandy beach near the Spanish border. Popular with Portuguese families.
Faro: Usually flown through, worth a night. Walled old town and the gateway to the Ria Formosa.

North · 30–60 min

Inland & the Alentejo

Twenty minutes from the coast the tourism stops. Whitewashed hill villages, cork oak, and the Monchique mountains — plus the Alentejo beyond.

Monchique: A spa village in the hills, 900m up. Cool in August, and the best views in the Algarve.
Silves: The old Moorish capital, with a red sandstone castle above an orange-growing valley.
Alte & Salir: Whitewashed hill villages with springs and nothing else. Lunch stops on a driving day.
Comporta: Two hours north, technically Alentejo. Rice paddies, pine and an enormous empty beach.

When to go

Longer than the Med, cooler in the water

The Algarve opens in March and runs to November, and Faro flights continue all winter. The thing people misjudge is the sea: this is the Atlantic, not the Mediterranean, so it sits several degrees cooler — around 18°C in June and 22°C at its warmest in September.

May, June, September and October are the value months. Winter here isn't beach weather but it is golf weather — 17–18°C and dry, which is why the courses fill from February.

Benagil cave

The sea cave with a hole in the roof. Kayak or SUP from Praia de Benagil — the big tour boats can't go inside.

Ponta da Piedade

Stacks and grottoes at the tip of Lagos. Take the small boat from the marina, not the coach trip.

Praia da Marinha

Regularly called Portugal's best beach. A cliff staircase down, and worth every step. Go early.

The Seven Hanging Valleys

A six-kilometre clifftop walk from Marinha to Vale Centeanes. Spring and autumn — no shade at all.

Cabo de São Vicente

The south-west corner of Europe, and where the Portuguese navigators set off from. Windy and enormous.

Ria Formosa

Boat through the lagoon to the barrier islands. Flamingos, oyster beds, and beaches with almost nobody on them.

Monchique

Nine hundred metres up, ten degrees cooler, and a spa village at the top. The escape from an August heatwave.

Tavira

Roman bridge, thirty-odd churches, and a ferry to an island beach. The nicest town on the coast.

One airportFaro (FAO), centrally placed. Twenty minutes to Albufeira, an hour to Lagos, fifty minutes to Tavira.

Time zoneSame as the UK, all year. No jet lag and no clock confusion.

CurrencyEuro. Cards accepted almost everywhere.

Sea temperatureAtlantic, so cooler than the Med — 18°C in June, 22°C at best in September. Warmer in the eastern lagoons.

Flight time2h 45m from London. One of the shortest in our range.

Motorway tollsThe A22 along the coast is electronically tolled. Hire cars need a transponder — check it's included.

Before you book

Five things worth knowing

The sea is Atlantic, not Mediterranean. Several degrees cooler than Spain or Greece at the same latitude. Lovely in September, brisk in June. The eastern lagoons are the warm exception.

Albufeira is two resorts. The old town around the fishing beach is charming. The Strip up the hill is not the same thing at all, and they're a ten-minute walk apart.

Steps matter in the west. Marinha, Camilo and most of the famous coves are down long cliff staircases. Beautiful, and genuinely unsuitable for some people.

Tolls catch out hire cars. The coastal motorway is electronic-only. Make sure your rental includes a transponder or you'll get fines by post months later.

Winter is golf season. February to April, 18°C and dry, and the courses are why half the flights are full. Not a beach holiday, but a very good week.
