The short version

Barbados, St Lucia and Antigua are not interchangeable

They're sold in the same brochure spread at similar prices and they suit completely different people. Barbados is flat, developed and sociable, with the best restaurant scene and the widest hotel choice. St Lucia is mountainous and dramatic — the Pitons, rainforest, and beaches at the bottom of steep roads. Antigua is low-lying with 365 beaches, calm water and the most relaxed feel of the three. Choosing on price alone is how people end up on the wrong one.

The rule that matters

West coast calm, east coast wild

Every island in the eastern Caribbean has an Atlantic side and a Caribbean side. The east faces open ocean — dramatic, windy, often unswimmable. The west is sheltered, flat and where virtually every resort sits. It's obvious once you know it and invisible in a brochure photograph, and it's why the Barbados west coast costs more than the east. If a deal looks unusually cheap, check which coast it's on.

Beyond the resort

These are countries, not just beaches

Barbados has Bridgetown's UNESCO Garrison, rum distilleries dating to 1703 and a Friday night fish fry at Oistins that half the island turns out for. St Lucia has a drive-in volcano and sulphur springs. Antigua has Nelson's Dockyard, still a working Georgian naval yard. Hiring a car for two days here is worth more than a week of the buffet.

The most developed and the most sociable. Flat, easy to drive, and with the best food and nightlife in the eastern Caribbean.

Platinum Coast: Holetown and Paynes Bay on the west. Calm water, smart hotels, and the highest prices on the island.
St Lawrence Gap: South coast. Livelier, better value, and walkable to restaurants and bars.
Crane & the south-east: Dramatic Atlantic-facing cliffs and pink sand. Beautiful, and check swimming conditions.
Bathsheba: East coast. Surf, boulders and no swimming — a day trip, not a base.

St Lucia

The dramatic one. Rainforest, the Pitons rising straight out of the sea, and the most romantic hotels in the region.

Soufrière: Under the Pitons. Spectacular, remote, and 90 minutes from the main airport.
Rodney Bay & Gros Islet: North end. The busiest strip, best beaches, and the Friday street party.
Marigot Bay: A tiny sheltered inlet that Hollywood keeps filming. Small, smart, boat-focused.
Cap Estate: The northern tip. Quiet, upmarket, and close to the golf.

Antigua

Low-lying, calm and famously claimed to have 365 beaches. The most relaxed of the three and the best for sailing.

Dickenson Bay: The main resort beach in the north-west. Calm, sandy, well served.
Jolly Harbour: West coast marina community. Good value, self-catering options, sunsets.
English Harbour: The south. Nelson's Dockyard, yachts, and the most atmospheric corner of the island.
Half Moon Bay: East coast. A perfect crescent with real surf. Stunning, and often not swimmable.

Short hops

Adding a second island

Inter-island flights are short and cheap. A week and a week, or ten nights and four, gives you two very different holidays for one long-haul fare.

Barbados + St Lucia: Flat and sociable, then mountainous and dramatic. The best contrast of the three.
Antigua + Barbuda: Ninety minutes by ferry to pink sand and almost nobody. Still rebuilding since 2017.
St Lucia + Martinique: An hour by ferry to France — different language, different food, same sea.
Grenada: An hour from Barbados. Spice island, black-sand beaches, and far fewer visitors.

When to go

Dry season, and the hurricane window

December to April is dry, sunny and reliable — and priced accordingly. June to November is the Atlantic hurricane season, peaking in September. Most trips in that window are completely fine, and prices are dramatically lower, but it's a real risk rather than a theoretical one.

Late April, May and early June are the value sweet spot — dry season conditions, well below Christmas prices, and before the hurricane risk builds. If you do travel June to November, make sure the insurance covers disruption properly.

Barbados' west coast has resident hawksbills and greens. Go on a small catamaran, not the party boat.

Oistins fish fry

Friday night in Barbados. Grilled marlin, rum punch and a sound system. The best evening on the island.

Rum distilleries

Mount Gay in Barbados has been distilling since 1703 — the oldest in the world. Tours run most weekdays.

The Pitons

Climb Gros Piton with a guide — four hours, steep, and the view is the whole point of St Lucia.

Nelson's Dockyard

Antigua's Georgian naval yard, still working. UNESCO-listed and best at sunset from Shirley Heights.

Bathsheba

Barbados' Atlantic coast. Surf, wind and boulders the size of houses. Don't swim, do go.

Sulphur Springs

St Lucia's drive-in volcano at Soufrière, with mud baths. Smells terrible, feels wonderful.

A catamaran day

Every island runs them. Snorkel stops, lunch aboard, and the coastline from the water. Book the small boat.

Things that catch people out

Direct flightsBarbados, St Lucia and Antigua all take direct UK flights, around 8h 30m to 9h. No stopover needed.

Drive on the leftAll three are former British colonies. Familiar roads, English road signs, and English spoken everywhere.

Time zoneFour or five hours behind the UK depending on the season. Easy westbound, harder coming home.

CurrencyBarbados dollar and East Caribbean dollar, both pegged to the US dollar. USD is widely accepted.

Which coastWest and south for calm swimming, east for drama. This is the single most important detail on any quote.

Hurricane seasonJune to November, peaking September. Prices drop sharply and so does certainty. Insure properly.

Departure taxesUsually included in the fare, but some islands charge separately at the airport. We'll confirm before you fly.

Beaches are publicOn all three islands, including in front of the smartest hotels. You can walk the whole coast.

Before you book

Five things worth knowing

Check which coast the hotel is on. West and south are sheltered and swimmable. East faces the Atlantic. A suspiciously cheap deal is usually east-facing.

Barbados for food, St Lucia for scenery, Antigua for calm. That's the honest three-line summary, and it's a better basis for choosing than the price difference.

Soufrière is ninety minutes from the airport. St Lucia's most beautiful corner is also its most remote. Worth it, but not with a toddler after a nine-hour flight.

Hurricane season is a real trade-off. Half price for a reason. Most trips are unaffected, but if the risk would spoil the holiday, pay for December to April.

Two islands cost little more than one. Inter-island hops are forty minutes. It's the best value upgrade in the Caribbean and almost nobody sells it.
