24 Night Singapore, Australia & Bali

Twenty-two hours in the air each way, so you're stopping regardless. Getting off properly on both legs turns one punishing journey into four destinations — and usually costs no more than the straight-through fare.

The stopovers are the whole argument

This is the single most valuable thing an agent can do on an Australia booking, and online engines never show it.

Every route to Australia stops somewhere. Booking engines treat that stop as a two-hour transit; we treat it as three nights. The fare difference between straight-through and a double stopover is frequently negligible, and it converts twenty-two hours of flying into three manageable legs. You arrive in Sydney rested rather than wrecked, and you come home via a beach instead of stepping off a red-eye into a British Monday.

The itinerary

Twenty-four nights. Three flights out, three home, and no leg longer than eight hours.

Singapore's Supertrees and skyline1

Singapore

3 nights

The first break. Easy, English-speaking, and where the body clock starts adjusting.

  • Gardens by the Bay and the free Supertree light show
  • Hawker centres — Michelin stars for a few pounds
  • Marina Bay Sands SkyPark at dusk
  • Sleep properly before the second flight

Where you stay: Chinatown or Marina Bay, both well connected to Changi.

Getting there: 13 hours from the UK, landing afternoon.

Sydney Opera House and the harbour2

Sydney

5 nights

The arrival city, and the easiest landing in Australia. Five nights covers the harbour, the beaches and the mountains.

  • Bondi to Coogee clifftop walk — six kilometres, free, and the best thing in the city
  • The ferry to Manly, which is the nicest commute in the world
  • BridgeClimb at dawn if the budget stretches
  • The Blue Mountains, two hours west — an overnight beats a day trip

Where you stay: Circular Quay for the icons, Bondi for the beach, Manly for quiet and a ferry commute.

Getting there: 8 hours from Singapore, arriving morning.

A boat on the water near the coast3

Cairns & the reef

5 nights

The Great Barrier Reef and the oldest rainforest on earth, meeting at a beach.

  • An outer reef day on a small boat — twenty people, not three hundred. The biggest quality call of the trip
  • Daintree and Cape Tribulation, ideally with an Indigenous guide
  • Snorkel or dive; the outer sites are in far better condition than the inner
  • Port Douglas rather than Cairns as a base if you can

Where you stay: Port Douglas for a nicer town and closer reef access; Cairns for cheaper and better flight links.

Getting there: 3 hours by air from Sydney.

A city waterfront in daylight4

Melbourne

6 nights

Coffee, laneways and the best food in Australia, plus the Great Ocean Road starting an hour out.

  • Laneways, rooftop bars and small galleries behind unmarked doors
  • The Great Ocean Road over two days, not one — Twelve Apostles at sunset
  • Koalas at Kennett River on the way
  • Phillip Island's penguin parade at dusk

Where you stay: Melbourne CBD for trams and laneways, with two nights on the Great Ocean Road.

Getting there: 1h 30m from Cairns via Sydney, or direct.

A Balinese cliff and beach5

Bali

5 nights

The way home. A beach, no schedule, and you land back in the UK rested.

  • Sanur or Seminyak for calm water and easy days
  • One temple at sunrise if you feel like it
  • A spa, repeatedly
  • Nothing, which is the point

Where you stay: South coast, close to the airport — this leg is about recovery, not touring.

Getting there: 6 hours from Melbourne to Denpasar, then 16 hours home with one stop.

What it costs

Guide prices per person, two sharing, outside school holidays. The hotel standard is the biggest single variable.

StandardWhat that meansGuide price pp
4-starGood hotels throughout, comfortable Bali beach resort£3,899
4-star plusHarbour-view Sydney, Port Douglas rather than Cairns, pool villa in Bali£5,199
5-starLandmark hotels throughout and a luxury Bali resort£7,899

Australia is the expensive leg and there's no way round it — hotels, food and internal flights all cost more than the UK. Singapore and Bali bring the average down. The upgrade that changes the trip most is the small-boat reef day, which is a few hundred pounds and worth every penny.

When to go

Australia's south and its tropical north want opposite seasons, which is the central planning problem.

Sydney and Melbourne are best from October to April, their spring to autumn. Cairns and the reef are best from April to October, the dry season, when the water is clearest and there are no stingers. March to May and September to November are the honest compromise and what we'd book. Avoid Christmas and January — Australian school holidays, when prices double and domestic flights fill.

Questions people ask

Is the stopover version really no dearer?

Often it's cheaper. We price both and show you. It's the clearest case there is for booking through an agent rather than online.

Is 24 nights too long?

It's what Australia actually needs. Two weeks means four days in transit and one city. If you can't take three and a half weeks, we'd suggest Asia this year instead.

Can we swap Melbourne for Uluru?

Yes. Uluru is two nights and three hours from Sydney. Some people do both, which adds four nights.

Why Bali on the way home rather than out?

Because you want the beach when you're tired, not when you're fresh. Coming home via a beach is the difference between landing rested and landing wrecked.
